The new FREJUS tunnel has a length of about 13 km and a tunnel inner diameter of 8 eight metres; it is equipped with 34 shelters of 110 square metres for rescue services, 10 technical stations and 9 bypass points for the passage of rescue vehicles. The Frejus safety tunnel connects Italy with France between the towns of Bardonecchia, in Piedmont, and Modane, in the Savoy department. The strategic importance of the project lies in the adaptation of one of the busiest Alpine crossings to the latest tunnel safety standards, allowing a major upgrade of the road connection network with France.
PROJECT EXPECTATIONS: UPGRADING ROAD TUNNELS THROUGH THE REPLACEMENT OF LIGHTING FIXTURES ON METAL CABLE TRAYS
The intervention consists in the construction of a second motorway tunnel, parallel to the existing tunnel, which will guarantee the safety of users, as it will allow the separation of traffic flows. In addition to the construction of the second tube, the existing tunnel will be modernised and secured.
- Better energy efficiency and long-lasting performances;
- Drivers' safety, both day and night, at the entrance, while crossing and exit, adequate conditions of visual comfort with appropriate lighting;
- Compliance with the UNI 11095 standard, a variable luminous flux depending on external atmospheric conditions.
SOLUTIONS ADOPTED BY PALAZZOLI:
The lighting calculations involved the use of XTIGUA-T54 and TIGUA-T54 floodlights in the tunnel and RINO LED ceiling lights in the technical stations and by-passes. Maximum effectiveness was achieved through the design and implementation of optics specifically created for the purpose, in order to achieve high levels of installation quality.
Ceiling lights and floodlights for tunnels are made entirely of AISI 316L stainless steel and aluminium alloy with a low copper content, resistant to galvanic corrosion for long-lasting performances. The specific LED sources for lighting road tunnels developed by Palazzoli guarantee uniform distribution of the light beam, high visual comfort and reduce glare.
Palazzoli's floodlights and ceiling lights for tunnels comply with:
